Leading construction company Hansen Yuncken says its Cairns office has defied the global economic downturn by employing more staff and moving to larger office space close to the city’s CBD.
Since establishing its Cairns office in 2007, Hansen Yuncken’s presence in the north of Queensland has grown rapidly, and it now employs close to 60 staff in the region.

Qld & NT Manager, Tony Swan, says choosing Cairns as an entry point into the Queensland construction market has proven to be a successful strategy.
Mr Swan says Hansen Yuncken last month moved to larger and more prominent office space at Level 1, 140 Mulgrave Road, Westcourt, close to the Cairns CBD.
“Hansen Yuncken’s decision to set up a base in Cairns was on the back of securing the Cairns Airport Domestic Terminal Redevelopment project, however we’ve been pleased with the number of other construction projects that we’ve been able to pick up,” Mr Swan says.
“Our expertise in delivering public sector projects and Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects has helped us defy the global economic downturn at a time when others in the industry are struggling. This government work has helped to offset the significant drop in private construction work.
“Hansen Yuncken’s CEO, Peter Kennedy, recently re-affirmed the company’s long term commitment to Cairns and North Queensland, and this has allowed us to pursue the growth of our new Townsville office and consider the establishment of a Brisbane office.”
Mr Swan says the Cairns Airport Domestic Terminal Redevelopment project is on target for an October 2010 completion, well ahead of the contract completion date.
Hansen Yuncken also has handed over the Coles Supermarket at Stockland Earlville Shopping Centre and Australian Quarantine & Inspection Services office and laboratory building, with both projects being completed on time and on budget.
“We have continued our strong working relationship with Coles by also securing the Coles Supermarket and Shopping Centre at Sugarworld, Edmonton. We’re working hard to complete this project ahead of schedule to enable our client to take advantage of Easter 2010 trading,” Mr Swan says.
“Meanwhile, the recently awarded $17 million James Cook University School of Dentistry project and the $100 million-plus Building the Education Revolution (BER) P21 Schools projects have provided us with the opportunity to further grow the business in the region and create more local jobs.”
Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is one of Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractors. The company employs over 600 people around Australia with offices in Cairns, Townsville, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart, Newcastle and Shepparton/Albury.
