Chosen ahead of senior school students from across SA, Samuel has been awarded this year’s coveted “Prix La Perouse” and as part of his prize will travel to New Caledonia for a 10-day all-expenses paid trip sponsored by the French Embassy.
Having studied French for the past 13 years, Samuel said he was thrilled to record the highest overall mark in 2009 from the Alliance Francaise d’Adelaide and win the Prix La Perouse.
‘I’ve always loved studying and speaking the French language, and have been really pleased by how far I have come during Years 11 and 12 especially,” he said.
“It’s great to be able to hold conversations with other French speakers without having to stop and reach for the dictionary every 30 seconds.
“Winning the Prix La Perouse is certainly a bonus and something I never expected. I can’t wait to get on the plane to New Caledonia!”
Scotch College offers language classes to students throughout its junior, middle and senior schools, including French and Japanese.
The Alliance Francaise d’Adelaide conducts supplementary courses for French students with a focus on developing communicative competence. Based at Wayville, the Alliance supports schools in teaching students grammar exercises to practice and strengthen their French language skills.
Every year the Alliance holds exams for all senior students in SA with the highest ranked Year 12 student from each school invited to participate in a follow-up oral exam with the Director of the Alliance and other members of the judging committee before a winner is eventually chosen.
