Construction milestone for Central Coast Cancer Centre
Construction on the Central Coast Regional Cancer Centre (CCRCC) has reached a major milestone, with Australia’s largest private commercial building company, Hansen Yuncken, undertaking the cement pour for three radiotherapy bunkers.
The bunkers will house two linear accelerators with future expansion capacity for third accelerator. The walls of the bunkers are up to 2 metres thick and required 1500 cubic metres of concrete – equivalent to 50 standard house slabs.
The $38.6 million CCRCC project will enhance cancer treatment and support services in the Central Coast. In addition to the radiotherapy bunkers, the project includes a CT simulator, mould workshop, clinical and administration offices, and a services plant room at Gosford Hospital, as well as the extension and refurbishment of consulting and chemotherapy treatment rooms at both Gosford and Wyong Hospitals.
Hansen Yuncken Newcastle Regional Manager, Trevor Nye, said that the project would provide an important boost to cancer support and treatment services in the Central Coast.
“We’re pleased to be involved in this significant project which will provide a much-needed health service to people of the Central Coast who are living with cancer,” Mr Nye said.
“Hansen Yuncken has a strong track record in the construction of major hospitals and medical facilities across the country with key projects including Sydney’s Medica Centre, Orange Hospital and the construction of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, which once completed will be the most advanced hospital in the country.
“We’ve enjoyed a strong ongoing relationship with the client Health Infrastructure following our successful completion of the Cancer Centre Early Works projects at both Gosford and Tamworth Hospitals.
“This CCRCC is a significant undertaking for Hansen Yuncken with construction and development works across two sites. The project is on track for completion in 2013.”
Hansen Yuncken, established in 1918, is Australia’s largest private commercial construction contractor. The company employs 700 people around Australia with offices in Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Orange, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton, Hobart, Shepparton and Albury/Wodonga.
