Hanging gardens feature in new $105 million CBD apartment development
More than 3000 exotic and native plants will be used to create hanging gardens in a new residential apartment development in the city’s bohemian West End following the project’s approval from the Development Assessment Commission (DAC).
The DAC Approval follows the project receiving pre-lodgement approval from both Renewal SA and the South Australian State Government Architect.
Bohem, which will overlook Whitmore Square, will transform an unsightly and largely derelict prime corner site into a $105 million residential apartment building with the podium level balconies featuring lush, hanging gardens.
A twenty-two metre vertical garden will also be planted to create a bold façade surrounding Bohem’s Wright Street entrance.
Its expected future residents will add to the building’s lush exterior by adding plantings to their own private balconies. Developers Starfish Developments will provide tips to residents on how to create and maintain their own balcony garden.
Designed by leading architects Woods Bagot, the greening of Bohem’s exterior forms part of an overarching design concept that brings together a number of interesting and eye catching elements.
Starfish Developments Managing Director Damon Nagel said Bohem provided an opportunity to create a unique and distinctive building that suited its location in the bohemian west end of the city.
“Adelaide’s West End is a fusion of cultures and styles and this is reflected in Bohem’s design which brings together various design elements, scaled heights and setbacks, and exterior finishes and materials,” said Mr Nagel.
“The design takes full advantage of its location with future residents to enjoy sweeping views from all directions with a choice of apartments to be offered facing the city, Adelaide Hills and the metropolitan coastline to the west.
“The project’s proximity to the Central Markets, weekend pop up markets, Gouger Street restaurants, hip laneway bars and the green city squares will be key attractions for residents at Bohem.”
Bohem will incorporate 220 one, two and three bedroom apartments with a podium level rooftop garden with a pool, gymnasium, recreation deck and outdoor entertaining and barbecue area.
The design integrates two buildings above the 5 storey podium level with scaled heights from 12 to 17 storeys.
The building has been designed by leading architects Woods Bagot, led by Principal Gavin Kain, in conjunction with South Australian architect Enzo Caroscio.
Approved plans for Bohem follows the success of Adelaide-based Starfish Developments joint venture with the Asian Pacific Group on Vue on King William.
Bohem is a sole venture for Starfish Developments which currently has $370 million worth of projects in varying stages of planning and construction, both in South Australia and Western Australia.
Bohem will go to the market in March 2015 and is expected to create around 200 jobs during construction.
