Construction starts on Coles Alice Springs redevelopment
Works have commenced on a major redevelopment of the Coles Supermarket in Alice Springs, which will set a new benchmark for grocery shopping in the town.
The Coles supermarket, located in the Alice Springs Shopping Centre on the corner of Bath Street and Gregory Terrace, is being transformed into a modern, market-style supermarket and will incorporate a host of new features for local customers when it is officially re-launched in December.
The store will remain open for customers during normal operating hours while upgrade works are completed, which Coles is fast-tracking to ensure minimal disruption.
Coles Alice Springs Store Manager Nick Ruiz says the redevelopment will be the most significant upgrade to the supermarket since it was first opened in 1980, and will be vastly superior to the existing store.
“The new store will certainly raise the bar for shoppers in Alice Springs, so we’re really looking forward to completing the redevelopment and introducing customers to a host of new features,” he said.
“Once completed, the store will incorporate a new contemporary layout, including new fresh produce, bakery and delicatessen areas. We’ll also have a ‘grab and go section’ offering quality foods such as pre-pack hams, pre-packed olives for convenience as well as great platter ideas, which are ideal for any occasion.
“Our newly refreshed store will also have a scoop-and-weigh bar for customers to pick and pack their own nuts, seeds and dried fruits.
“We will stock a diverse range of products to give shoppers even more choice, including great NT products such as Pauls Milk, as well as herbs and vegetables from Territory Lettuce.
“In addition to traditional checkouts and the more recent self-serve checkouts for people making quick purchases, we’re also introducing new hybrid self-serve checkouts for the first time including traditional conveyer belts, which will enable customers doing their big shop for the week to conveniently serve themselves if that is their preference.”
Significantly, the redevelopment will also underpin the jobs of more than 180 local people, who will continue to work at the store.
“As one of Alice Springs’ largest employers, Coles is pleased to be able provide jobs for so many locals and we will continue to provide more employment opportunities into the future,” Nick said.
“And while we’re excited at the prospect of providing customers with a new shopping experience, we will also be doing all that we can in the meantime to minimise disruption to shoppers while continuing to trade as normal.”
Coles Alice Springs is located in the Alice Springs Shopping Centre on the corner of Bath Street and Gregory Terrace. The store will continue to trade during redevelopment works from 6am to 11pm Monday to Friday, and 6am to 10pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
