Crypts proving to be hot property
Demand for new sites leads to major cemetery expansion.
The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority will embark on a $2.6 million expansion of the Enfield Memorial Park mausoleum this year to cater for growing demand for crypts.
The expansion will include 100 new indoor crypts and 274 outdoor crypts, which will take the total number of crypts within the cemetery’s mausoleum precinct to more than 1,100.
Prices for individual crypts in the new section of the mausoleum will range from $18,000 to $66,000, with construction expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Adelaide Cemeteries Authority Chief Executive Officer Robert Pitt anticipates that off-the-plan sales interest in the new single, double and companion crypts will be high.
“The Enfield mausoleum is one of the most significant in South Australia and the demand for crypts is extremely high,” said Mr Pitt.
“We currently have more than 700 crypts at Enfield but are almost at capacity, so these 374 new sites will definitely be appreciated by the local community.
“The demand from the general public for above-ground sites is certainly growing, with people continuing to invest plenty of time and effort when researching memorial options and choosing a final resting place for themselves or a loved one.”
Enfield Memorial Park was established as a cemetery in 1944, with its mausoleum built in 2002 which included the construction of more than 500 crypts. The mausoleum then underwent a major expansion in 2011, and following the upcoming extension will cement its standing as one of the state’s largest.
The Adelaide Cemeteries Authority is South Australia’s leading provider of cemetery, burial and cremation services, and is responsible for the administration and maintenance of West Terrace Cemetery, Enfield Memorial Park, Cheltenham Cemetery and Smithfield Memorial Park.
