Governor-General shows appreciation for Meals on Wheels
The Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO, has shown her support for one of Australia’s most respected service organisations, Meals on Wheels, in Adelaide today.
The Governor-General, who is also the Patron of the Australian Meals on Wheels Association, made an official visit to the Happy Valley branch of Meals on Wheels SA today where she delivered meals to a group of special clients, met volunteers and toured the kitchen facilities.
Australian Meals on Wheels National President Ron Welsh said the Governor-General’s visit would demonstrate to volunteers the widespread support for their work.
“Our volunteers deserve to be recognised for their important role in supporting people who find difficulty in shopping and or cooking for themselves,” Mr Welsh said.
“Meals on Wheels volunteers not only prepare and deliver a healthy and tasty meal, but they provide a friendly ear and make regular wellbeing checks, which are valued by our clients and their families.”
“In the lead-up to the 60th anniversary of Meals on Wheels in Australia next year, we’re delighted to have hosted Her Excellency in Adelaide today where our concept of home delivered meals first started.”
The South Australian organisation was the first of its kind to be constituted in Australia and the first to set out to produce its own meals with volunteer support.
